FAQ
What basic elements are necessary to have a website on the Internet?
  1. A domain name
  2. A web host
  3. Someone to create a website
  4. Someone to upload the website onto the web
  5. Someone to register the website with the search engines
  6. Someone to maintain the website
A web host is someone with an Internet server. For a yearly fee, they allow you to keep
your website on their Internet server and that service is called "web hosting."
What is a domain?
A domain, or domain name is your website's address or URL (Uniform Resource Locater)
i.e., www.catsmeow.com —and yes, you have to have one ~ (a url, not a cat).
How much does a domain name cost?
If you choose to obtain a domain name without a website, the cost to rent a domain
name varies by different companies, but the average cost is around $20 a year, which
includes registration. Most web designers offer free domain names and registration
when you acquire web hosting service from them.
How do I get a domain name?
A domain name (which is actually "rented") can be acquired, whether you have a web
site or not, from most web designers or web hosting services. Registration of a domain
name is good for one year. As long as the registration fee is paid on a yearly basis, that
domain name remains yours to use.

In my opinion, waiting until you are ready to have a web site developed before you
purchase a domain name is the best option. However, if you feel it is necessary to
reserve a domain name first and you "rent" one online, choose a company that allows
easy transfer of your domain in case you later decide to have your site hosted by a
different company.

If you have not yet chosen a domain name, I'll be happy to help you choose one during
a consultation.
What should my domain name be?
That's a highly personal decision, but the general rule of thumb is to select a name that
would closely describe what your web site will convey.
